Apple Crumble from the mini cocotte – Crispy & fruity

Juicy apples, a fine hint of cinnamon, and plenty of golden-brown streusel – you don't need much more for a truly great dessert. This apple crumble is prepared directly in small mini cocottes, meaning it comes from the oven to the table in individual portions.

The best part: preparation takes only a few minutes. In the oven, the apples become wonderfully soft and fruity, while the streusel gets a deliciously crispy crust.

Ingredients for 4 small cocottes

For the apple filling:

  • 4 medium apples
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch of salt

For the streusel:

  • 100 g flour
  • 70 g cold butter
  • 60 g brown sugar
  • 30 g ground almonds
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

Preparation

1. Prepare the apples

Wash the apples, quarter them, and remove the cores. Then, cut them into small, not-too-thin pieces. The peel can stay on the apples, as shown in the pictures.

2. Season the apple filling

Toss the apple pieces with the lemon juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a small pinch of salt. Then, distribute them evenly among four small cocottes.

3. Prepare the streusel

Mix the flour, brown sugar, ground almonds, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold butter in small pieces and use your fingertips to work everything into coarse crumbs.

Do not knead for too long – crumbles of varying sizes ensure a particularly crispy, rustic surface later on.

4. Fill the cocottes

Generously distribute the streusel over the apples. They should lie loosely on top and do not need to be pressed down.

5. Bake the apple crumble

Place the cocottes without lids into an oven preheated to 180 °C (356 °F) top/bottom heat and bake for about 25–30 minutes.

The crumble is ready when the apples are soft and the streusel has turned a rich golden-brown color.

6. Serve warm

Let the apple crumbles cool for a few minutes and serve them warm directly in the small cocottes.

Mahlzeit's Tip

For an especially good crumble, slightly tart and firm-fleshed apples like Elstar, Boskoop, or Braeburn are ideal. For something extra special, add vanilla to the apple filling or supplement the streusel with chopped hazelnuts.

And when the crumble comes out of the oven still warm, a scoop of vanilla ice cream is hard to beat.

Enjoy your meal, from the Mahlzeit team! 🍎
